The story continues...
We are looking to raise funds to enable us to complete the exhibit, book and documentary we have begun – including an extensive oral history database that we will donate to the historical society, and the managing of permissions and usage rights so we can publish and screen the Charles Van Damme’s story
in public domain. |
The exhibit so far.
Since 2006 we have been archiving historical artifacts, photos, artwork, gathering the oral history, and created a documentary film. We have a traveling exhibit that has shown at Maritime days, Studio 333, Bay Model and the Marin County Fair. Below are some examples of what we have created so far.

Encouraging participation.
The story of the Charles Van Damme has generated a sense of renewed pride to Marin County waterfront. Joe Tate, a performer on the Charles Van Damme, wrote a new song about the ferry boat. He performed it both times when a 4th July Charles Van Damme themed float was created and each time the float won first prize! Congrats to the Gates Co Operative and Victoria from Sausalito Wooden boats Tour.

The 9 Lives of the Charles Van Damme.
As 100 year old artifacts – The Paddlewheel and Steam stack remind us of the bygone era of the ferry boats, the colorful days as a restaurant with Juanita, the fact that well known artists, actors and musicians frequently visited, and that a local music and art scene was born there. They have become important well loved icons of our local history and deserve to be saved. Below is a portion of the exhibit illustrating her history in the form of a timeline.
